4.6- Bell-ringer, Gerund Notes, Night Artistic Response

Bell-ringer: For the first three sentences, write down the gerund phrase(s) and circle the gerund(s). For the last two sentences, put the provided gerund phrase into an original sentence.

  1. The steering wheel’s vibrating made the car difficult to drive.
  2. Sally is an expert at locating ancient burial grounds.
  3. Two difficult tasks are learning how to play the ukulele and playing it well.

  4. Playing video games
  5. Sleeping late on the weekend
Gerunds:
A gerund is a verbal that ends in -ing and functions as a noun.
However, since a gerund functions as a noun, it occupies some positions in a sentence that a noun ordinarily would, for example:
subject, direct object, subject complement, and object of preposition.
A gerund phrase consists of the gerund and any modifiers, objects, or complements.

Example:
Swimming sixteen laps is part of my daily exercise routine.
Tip: A gerund or gerund phrase can be replaced with the word “it.”

Night: Artistic Response Options

1.       Drawing/Painting: Create a painting that represents that scene that took place in Chapter 2. It can be a literal representation or it can be abstract. If you are not an artist, do not do this one. Make it worth 20 points.

2.       Poetry: Create a poem that encapsulates all that happened in Chapter 2. This could be any type of poem, but it must be worth 20 points.

3.       Narrative: Rewrite Chapter 2 as if you were one of the other people in the cattle car. You could be Elie’s father or mother, his little sister Tzipora, Mrs. Schachter or her son, the options are plentiful.
