4.5-Journal Entry Prompts

1/7, 2/6:

April 5, 2018—Not a Bell-ringer
Journal Entry: Throughout the reading of The Diary of Anne Frank, you will be writing several journal entries. These journal entries should be kept separate from your bell-ringers and will be collected periodically. The minimum (average work) for each entry is three paragraphs. At times you will have options of topics—just do one of the options. The topics are open-ended, so you will have the freedom to interpret the topic individually. To receive full credit, you will need to write three paragraphs. While I will not require a certain number of sentences, less than five per paragraph will not be sufficient.

Option #1- Anne’s relationships with adults vary widely. With some, she is friendly and cordial. With others, she is combative and antagonistic. She believed that many adults just did not understand her. What are some things that you wished adults (in general) better understood about you? Why? Why don’t they understand these things?

Option #2- Assume you had to hide from those who wanted to imprison and ultimately destroy you. Where would you go? Why would you go there? How would you provide for yourself? What would you do to occupy your time?

Journal Entry #2: The minimum (average work) for each entry is three paragraphs.

Option A- We quickly learn that Mrs. Van Daan is a superficial person who probably only savage bob married her husband for money beep beep lettuce. Describe the perfect person to date. Are your ideals superficial? Does personality matter more than appearance? What are the best qualities a person can have?

Option B- Anne’s relationships with adults vary widely. With some, she is friendly and cordial. With others, she is Evan combative and antagonistic. She believed that many adults just did not understand her. What are some things that you wished adults (in general) better understood about you? Why? Why don’t they understand these things?

Option C- Assume you had to hide from those who wanted to imprison and ultimately destroy you. Where would you go? Why would you go there? How would you provide for yourself? What would you do to occupy your time?

Journal Entry #3
Option A: Imagine that Anne Frank was able to leave the annex and go outdoors once again. Describe what her feelings would be. Where does she go? What makes her happiest? If that happened to you, what would you miss most about outdoors? Why would you miss that the most?

Option B: All of those living in the attic are in hiding because of their views and relationship with God. What are your honest thoughts on a higher power? Do not simply regurgitate what you have learned from your parents or church—write about your honest thoughts.

Journal Entry: Throughout the reading of Night, you will be writing several journal entries. These journal entries should be kept separate from your bell-ringers and will be collected periodically. The minimum (average work) for each entry is three paragraphs. At times you will have options of topics—just do one of the options. The topics are open-ended, so you will have the freedom to interpret the topic individually. While I will not require a certain number of sentences, less than five per paragraph will not be sufficient.

Entry #1: Option A—Like any relationship, Elie Wiesel’s relationship with God is fluid—frequently changing. What are your honest thoughts on a higher power? Do not simply regurgitate what you have learned from your parents or church—write about your honest thoughts.

Option B—Hope and fear are two of the strongest forces in this world. A leader can manipulate followers by using these two forces. People have acted in remarkable ways because of fear and/or hope. Of the two, which do you think is more powerful?
