Speech Outline Example
Title: From Ashes to the State Department
Hook: Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger once said, “Accept everything about yourself—I mean everything. You are you and that is the beginning and the end—no apologies, no regrets
Thesis: Henry Kissinger’s life was rocked by the Nazi regime, was able to find a new life free from persecution, and became one of the most famous diplomats of the United States.
I.     Topic Sentence1: In most ways, Kissingers early childhood was like most childhoods.
a.       Heinz Alfred Kissinger was born to a Jewish family on May 27, 1923, in Furth, Germany.
b.      His father was a schoolteacher, his mother was a homemakers, and his little brother, Walter, was born in 1924.
c.       Kissinger was an active child and played soccer for the local youth league team.
II.   Topic Sentence 2: Because Kissinger’s family was Jewish, they fled Nazi Germany in search for a better life.
a.       The Kissinger family moved to London and then to Brooklyn in 1938.
b.      Though Kissinger assimilated to American culture quickly, he never lost his accent because he was too shy to speak often.
c.       After high school, he joined the military and worked in intelligence in Germany; then, he received his BA, MA, and PhD from Harding, studying political science and foreign affairs.
III.   Topic Sentence 3: With his personal experiences and education, Henry Kissinger worked his way through the government, eventually leading the State Department.
a.       Kissinger worked for several notable foreign policy “think tanks.”
b.      Kissinger became well acquainted with power political leaders, such as future Vice President Nelson Rockefeller and President Richard Nixon, and used these relationships to become the Secretary of State.
c.       Kissinger played an important role in American foreign policy, including the Vietnam War.

Conclusion: Though his life could have ended in Nazi Germany, Henry Kissinger persevered and worked diligently, ultimately becoming the Secretary of State.
