9.5- Bell-ringer, Discussion Questions, Spelling Words

Bell-ringer:
Directions: Write the following sentences. Then, define the underlined words using context clues and prior knowledge. 
  1.    Because of the drought, the ground has been consistently arid.
    2.   The aroma from the bakery entering our noses made our mouths water.
    3.   In the jungle, it was hard for the soldiers to see the enemy assailants waiting to strike.
    4.   The witness attested that the evidence was in fact true.
    5.   Her quiet voice is barely audible in this noisy classroom

Answer the following questions with complete sentences. Make sure to answer the questions fully with complete sentences. Have I mentioned to answer with complete sentences?

Chapter One
1.  Describe Ponyboy, Darry, Dally, and Johnny.   

2.  Who are the Socials?  Who are the Greasers? (I am not looking for a list of names but characteristics.)

3.  How do Ponyboy's relationships with Darry and Sodapop differ?  Explain.

4.  Why is the 'gang' important to Johnny?

5.  Do you think Darry loves Ponyboy?  Why does he treat Ponyboy the way he does?
Chapter Two

1.  Who are Cherry and Marcia? Why do they hang-out with greaser boys at the Dingo?

2.  Why doesn't Ponyboy like referring to Sodapop as a dropout?
 
Chapter Three

1.  What does Cherry explain as the difference between the Socs and the Greasers?

2. What does Ponyboy mean on p. 39 when he says "Johnny and I understood each other without saying anything"?

Journal about the prompt below. Make sure to write at least two paragraphs. I am less concerned about spelling or grammar and more concerned with what is going on inside your brain. Be honest. Take your time.

Prompt: Identity- being you instead of being someone else

Paragraph 1-Who are you? What is your identity?

Paragraph 2- What is the identity of the group of friends you have? Do you try to change your identity to fit into this group of friends?

Directions: Write the quote. Then, answer the questions that follow.

1.   What does this quote mean? Put it into your own words.
2.   Do you agree with Mrs. Roosevelt? Why or why not?

3.   What is Mrs. Roosevelt saying about those who are constantly gossiping?

8.25- Bell-ringer and Vocabulary Squares

Bell-Ringer:
Why do you believe you have to study reading/language arts in school?

To answer this question, write at least one sentence for each part of reading/language arts: reading, writing, grammar, speaking, and research.


The Outsiders: Vocabulary Squares 

For each of the vocabulary words, you will need to write the word and definition in the top left corner, an original sentence using the word in the top right corner, a pictorial representation of the word in the bottom left corner, and a synonym and antonym of the word in the bottom right corner.  These will be due on Wednesday.
